Description

Antique Kabuki-Oni salt or pickle jar. Kabuki Oni refers to a combination of two iconic elements from traditional Japanese culture: the Oni demon and the Kabuki theatre style. The term is used to describe demon masks or characters that combine the terrifying features of an oni with the dramatic, theatrical visual style of kabuki theatre. An oni (鬼) is a malevolent spirit, demon or troll from Japanese mythology. They are often depicted as gigantic, orc-like creatures with red or blue skin, horns on their heads, sharp teeth and sometimes three eyes. They symbolise chaos and supernatural powers, but are also used in some rituals to ward off evil spirits. Kabuki is a classical Japanese form of theatre known for its exuberant, stylised costumes and dramatic make-up (known as kumadori). Actors use thick, bold lines on their faces to emphasise emotions or supernatural characters. Dimensions: 8 * 4 * 6 cm.
