Description

‘Stylised figure’ watercolour on paper. Signed lower left Rooskens and dated (19)70. Dutch school. Anton Rooskens (1906-1976) was a Dutch painter and metal teacher at the Don Bosco School in Amsterdam. As a painter, he was self-taught. He was one of the founders of the Experimental Group in Holland, which later merged into the Cobra movement. Rooskens was only involved in Cobra for a short time. Of the Cobra painters, he was the only one with a permanent job, so he could supply his fellow brothers such as Karel Appel and Corneille with paint and canvases. Rooskens initially painted in an expressionist style, with a clear influence of Vincent van Gogh. From 1945 (after moving to Amsterdam), his works became experimental. Influenced by the simple, austere forms of folk art (especially ancestral images from New Guinea, Africa and India), he developed his own form of expression, which consisted of a colourful play of lines and shapes. Entirely in the tradition of Cobra, fantasy creatures can be seen in his work. Professionally framed. H: 43 - W: 35.5 (framed)
