This polished specimen features rich brown hues that abound throughout its surface. Fine carving in the Chinese taste covers most of the tusk depicting the battle of Gaixia, won by Liu Bang, founder and first emperor of the Han dynasty. The seal is marked Tomotada and can refer to the Japanese ivory carver master living in the late 18th – beginning of 19th century. However, this indication is not decisive for dating. After elephant ivory was banned in 1972, woolly mammoth tusks became the material of choice for Chinese sculpture. Offered on a custom-made rootwood stand, carved in traditional Chinese style. Good condition. TUSK: H: 52 cm. – W outside: 98 cm. – W inside: 80 cm. – 4,5 kilos STAND: H: 22 cm. – W: 60 cm. – D: 12 cm. – 2,9 kilos
